Mark Russell from the United States will be giving the opening speech for the 26th edition of Noorderzon Performing Arts Festival Groningen. In 2005, Russell founded the world-renowned Under the Radar festival and still acts as its director. It is an international theatre festival based in the Public Theatre in New York, and has featured prominently as one of the highlights of the theatre season there for years now. He is also a major driving force and founder of the Directors Circle International; an informal mini-conference where some 25 to 30 leading American, European and other international programmers and producers meet to discuss their field. After previous editions in Vienna, Boston and Dublin, this year the Directors Circle International will be taking place in Groningen for the third year running. The speeches given by Mark Russell and general director of Noorderzon Femke Eerland will precede the opening performance of Chekhov’s First Play by Irish theatre company Dead Centre (9 PM).
