Heartwarming animation provides context to refugee crisis
If artists are the conscience of society, Cláudia Dias is a heartwarming advocate in this regard. In Tuesday: All that is solid melts into air – a line from The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx – the Portuguese choreographer uses a piece of string as point of departure in creating a live animation which reminds us that the refugee crisis is far from over. After making a strong impression with her Noorderzon debut in 2016, Monday: Watch out for the Right, in which she took on poet and writer Pablo Fidalgo Lareo in a boxing dance duel, Dias returns with another powerful and engaged tale. Tuesday is the second part of an ambitious seven-piece project which will take several years to complete, which revolves around meeting. In a day and age when front lines, walls and rows of refugees literally mark out the ‘own’ territory, and radical expression is part and parcel of everyday discourse, Dias throws out a line to connection and context.

“Monday: Watch out for the Right is a thought provoking piece of theatre that uses its unusual setting to open up new opportunities to question and debate the changes occurring in European society today.”
