Intimate and dauntless dance duel racing against time
A stage, a roll of white tape, two dancers. One is stark naked, the other clad in a dress. Split is a revealing, intense and highly polished dance duel created by one of the most firmly established and widely respected choreographers in Australia. In Lucy Guerin's well-received, award-winning show, two renowned dancers, Melanie Lane and Lilian Steiner, explore how they relate to themselves, to one another, and to femininity. In muted light and backed by a repetitive beat, the two bodies seek out each other, repel one another, dauntlessly, fragilely and nearly synchronously. While the seconds tick away, their room for manoeuvre shrinks, literally, as they mark off an ever smaller section of the stage. Ultimately a single, claustrophobic spot remains. It’s dancing against time, in an environment requiring more and more, while yielding less and less. All that remains is the question: How much of yourself do you want to reveal?

“Teeming with rage and passion, movement and complex relationships (…) Split is masterfully performed.”

- Jordan Beth Vincent, The Age
