Marieke looks back in time
Anyone thinking that 3D is a typical modern phenomenon has got it wrong. The first virtual reality photographs were already being made in the mid-19th century. A camera with two lenses would take a pair of images and with a special set of viewing glasses, you could truly experience depth in the resulting stereograms. Luckily, some wonderful images of Groningen have survived – dating back over a century! This is as close to the city's past as you can get. Experience how a contemporary photographer views these unique images: the marketplace hustle and bustle, setting up fair attractions and the beautiful old city centre. And what would it be like to actually take such stereograms today?

Prior to the lecture, you can experience Groningen over a century ago in 3D at the Northern Maritime Museum (Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum).
