Astounding, dark Ibsen in witty Chinese take
So what happens when the figurehead of a young generation of Chinese theatre makers decides to stage a retelling of Ghosts, the classic masterpiece by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen? He creates no less than an astounding, contemporary tragedy brimming with humour and emotion. Ghosts 2.0 is the dark Ibsen in a Chinese take: weighty yet whimsical, sad yet playful, original yet universal. Filmed with four cameras creating the type of selfie that YouTube is overflowing with, Wang transports the timeless tale of a family in decline into an entirely innate tradition. In his version, Osvald, the son in the original play, is a Chinese video maker. He returns from New York to his native country, where he unravels a startling secret from his youth, which he decides to make a movie out of. Ghosts 2.0 brings the ghost of Ibsen to life in Wang’s utterly unique world

“Unbelievable: a selfie can produce a classic. Unbelievable: the interconnection between theatre and film can be so smooth. It is indeed ghosts in motion. Ghost 2.0: a play you can’t miss”
