Drs. Lucia van Heteren | Theater over de grens (Theatre across the border)
The internationalisation in the theatre world has been on the agenda since minister Hedy d’Ancona officially introduced the concept as policy in the 1990s. Theatre ensembles, from Toneelgroep Amsterdam to Jakop Ahlbom, have successfully performed across borders. And festivals like Holland Festival and Noorderzon showcase the wonderful things being made outside our borders. But is there any other benefit to this internationalisation besides exciting experiences for actors travelling abroad and the interested audiences they encounter? This lecture will delve into the true interests served by international confrontation in the theatre. In an age when growing groups of Europeans are retreating into the known for fear of the other, places where meetings take place become more than simply venues for exotic entertainment.
