Bissane Al Charif | Women's memories
Remembering what you left behind
You pull the door shut behind you. And you leave for destinations unknown. Away from your home, your friends and your old life. But also away from the violence of war. Syrian artist Al Charif experienced this when she left her war-torn country to take up a new existence in France. Her documentary installation Women's memories uses sound clips, film and photographs to tell the stories of eight refugee Syrian women. They recall memories of their trip, tell about what they brought along and what they left behind. But they also speak about the huge rift in their lives as a result of shutting that door. A moment that would determine the rest of their lives.
“Because Al Charif chose detail over drama, the documentary results are mesmerising in their mundanity.”
