Centrum Beeldende Kunst Groningen en Platform GRAS | Action>Reaction by Sjimmie Veenhuis
DIY work of art
Have you always wanted to make a work of art? You now can with the light sculpture Action>Reaction by Sjimmie Veenhuis (Emmeloord, 1984), which was commissioned by the Groningen Centre for Visual Arts (Centrum Beeldende Kunst Groningen) and Platform GRAS. Especially for Noorderzon, Veenhuis created an interactive installation made from a thousand illuminated switches which viewers can operate themselves. Move the switches and create your own patterns and illusions, change the work made by others or watch while someone else takes charge. The role of artist and viewer is reversed as a result: you can now determine what you will be seeing, but what does it mean exactly to turn something on or off with a switch?
Groningen Centre for Visual Arts (CBK: Centrum Beeldende Kunst Groningen) supports the visual arts sector in Groningen, while the Groningen Architecture and Urban Development Platform (Platform GRAS: Platform Groningen Architectuur en Stedenbouw) is a centre for architecture in Groningen. Every year the organisations commission artists to create an artwork for Noorderzon. Sjimmie Veenhuis is the 2017 winner.
