Boyzie Cekwana | The last King of Kakfontein

Battling against the kleptocrat kakistocracy
Welcome to Kakfontein, where the kingdom is shattered. Imbued with cities of gold and mountains of diamonds, this kingdom, once the envy of some, has now been reduced to nothing more than a kleptocratic kakistocracy. A decrepit king wearing a showerhead for a crown laments the ruined remains of his once glorious fiefdom. Only when dancing in the spotlights can the king still feel powerful. Theatre maker and choreographer Boyzie Cekwana is one of the founders of modern dance in South Africa and views art as a form of political activism. In The Last King of Kakfontein, Cekwana responds with humour, dance, video and music to times where politicians such as Jacob Zuma and Donald Trump have unleashed their thieving populist fingers on democracy.

“Cekwana's art allowed this audience a vivid and powerful view of his culture, and an exciting, aesthetically enthralling glimpse into his imaginative take on contemporary dance.”
