Joyful dance with an ironic nod
The five energetic male dancers of the Ambiguous Dance Company understand the meaning of wry self-mockery. Packed with humour and with a liberating nod to its audience, Rhythm of Human embodies the way modern-day people battle the straitjacket of existence. Seeking a rhythm and clashing with the tempo that society demands, with great pleasure the five dancers transform simple gestures into an entirely personal rhythm of life. In their movements, alongside the universal familiarity of people in search of meaning, the realisation also shines through that there is a dance in us all: we all swoop, frolic and twist ourselves through life, seeking the right rhythm and a suitable form. Rhythm of Human was awarded the prize for the best performance by the Korean Association of Dance Critics, and this August they will be showing us in Groningen just why they won.

Though this piece, one of only a handful in Ambiguous’s repertoire, is not new, it felt vibrant and fresh, brimming with emotion, interesting images and questions, and its five dancers’ impressive, wide-rainging skills
