Annie Dorsen | The Great Outdoors

Straying into digital infnity from an inflatable planetarium
From the anonymity of their living rooms, at any given moment millions of people are flinging countless remarks, opinions and comments into virtual space. American writer and director Annie Dorsen addresses the internet in The Great Outdoors as if she was a curious 19th century explorer. Which stories does this infinite digital landscape actually contain? Stretched out on the floor of an inflatable planetarium, you are enchanted by a digital starry sky while being read a algorithmically generated text, based on comments on blogs and chat sites. Does this dreamy, relaxed idea of a digital campfire enable us to regard that multitude of voices with more sympathy? The Great Outdoors is a coproduction of Noorderzon and Grand Theatre Groningen. Dorsen was in residency at the Grand Theatre just this March to work on this show.

“Sometimes the Hamlet machine produces inherently meaningless phrases which in their poetic beauty easily equal sentences in the original."

- Joost Ramaer of the Theaterkrant on A Piece of Work
