Gravity & Other Myths | Backbone
Plain, powerful circus theatre
In the same manner that Romeo and Juliet are fiction, the Australian circus theatre group Gravity & Other Myths considers gravity to be just another myth. For them the magic of theatre is not in watching fictitious theatrical characters, but in sharing a space as performers and audience, while the former abolish gravity. Just like the group abolishes the boundaries between circus, dance and theatre. Their performance Backbone is a musical, dancing and especially plain show about ‘power’. The power of the human body, the power of the individual and particularly the power of watching remarkable physical theatre together. With Backbone Noorderzon opens the 27th edition of the festival.
“Under Darcy Grant’s impeccable direction, the separate elements of dance, circus and theatre disappear, melting together in an extraordinary choreography of movement so elegant in conception, so perfect in execution, that it can only be described as pure art.”
