Janka Nabay & The Bubu Gang

Undisputed king of the Bubu
It is impossible not to be swayed by the hypnotic, far-out sound of Ahmed Janka Nabay. In the 1990s, the West African singer was already a major star in his home country thanks to his modern interpretation of Bubu music, the traditional religious folk music of Sierra Leone. The original sounds of bamboo shoots and car parts were replaced with synthesizers and drum machines by Janka Nabay: a folk hero was born. Forced to flee his country, wracked by civil war, he arrived in New York in 2003. Together with members of indie rock groups from Brooklyn (Skeletons, Gang Gang Dance, Starring), Janka Nabay honours his beloved Bubu by smoothly melting it together with Afro-beat and psychedelic rock.

“This guy’s a fucking phenomenon, bordering on genius, and you should go see him and his clearly inexhaustible Bubu Gang perform any and every chance you get.”
