Silke Huysmans and Hannes Dereere | Mining Stories

Listening to a collage of voices
On 5 November 2015, a devastating stream of mud polluted with poisonous mine waste swept away a number of villages in Brazilian mining province Minas Gerais. Theatre maker Silke Huysmans lived next to the location of the disaster until the age of seven. With her artistic partner Hannes Dereere she returned to speak with the current inhabitants. Together with interviews with a few scientists, the two artists used the conversations to create a special performance as a sound collage. Mining Stories is an intriguing trip through a labyrinth of stories. The performance connects the voices of the miners with major social themes such as globalisation and our hunger for raw materials. Mining Stories was selected for CircuitX, the cross-section of the best Flemish performances by young theatre makers and is coproduced by Noorderzon and Grand Theatre.

“With Mining Stories, theatre makers Silke Huysmans and Hannes Dereere have created a carefully structured ‘theatre essay’, stylistically crafted to the very last detail (…). Everything fits, with great dramaturgic, philosophical and almost scientific precision”

- Evelyne Coussens at Theaterkrant.nl
