Musical documentary masterpiece evoking Chekhov
Russian playwright Anton Chekhov was a master in depicting the lives of the idle, well-to-do bourgeoisie. I Am a Seagull is musical, multi-layered documentary that evokes this perfectly. The film is about the extraordinary theatre company The Chekhov Project, which includes well-known TV actors and a Pulitzer Prize winner. For sixteen summers they have been gathering at an age-old farm near New York City. In this very Chekhovian setting, every year they stage one of his plays within a day, together with and for the local community. I Am a Seagull – referring to Chekhov's The Seagull, in which everyone is enamoured of the wrong person – comprises a magnificent series of depictions of the 12-hour theatrical spectacle and the creative process leading up to it, with boundaries fading between actors and audience, imagination and reality, just like during the project itself.

“Through juxtaposed phases of rehearsal, live performance, and pure cinema, this experience captures the idealism, contradictions, and raw instinct that fuel theater-making itself”
