Between light and shadow

Ekahuil is a Mexican artist, cellist, performer, and composer who continuously explores the role and boundaries of the cello within society and the music industry. His music moves between light and darkness: raw and poetic, energetic and introspective. He blends the classical sound of the cello with traditional Mexican rhythms, neo-Aztec influences, and the raw energy of street rock, post-punk, alternative rock, and metal.

Through original compositions and live improvisations, Ekahuil turns every performance into a unique musical experience. His work is inspired by artists such as Apocalyptica, Sepultura, and Gojira, as well as cellists including Ernst Reijseger, Zoë Keating, and Yo-Yo Ma.

The name Ekahuil means “shadow” in Nahuatl, the ancient Aztec-Mexica language. The name reflects his exploration of the space between light and darkness and his fascination with duality, diversity, multiculturalism, heritage, and modernity. In doing so, he creates a musical universe where chamber music merges with the rhythmic, spiritual, and symbolic power of Mexican traditions.

In addition, Ekahuil is the founder of CellOut!, an artistic-social project exploring how cello music can respond to its surroundings through improvisation and active listening. CellOut! transforms everyday locations into live musical experiences, where the urban soundscape, society, and the cello come together to create the music.
