Lost in colour

Red means stop. Green means go. But imagine the chaos if those distinctions start to blur. If the ultimate control mechanism were to lose its simple clarity. 49 traffic lights transform the central lake in the Noorderplantsoen with a work that transgresses their strict urban code.

Trànsit signals beauty, edginess and urban rawness. Including a powerful musical score inspired by the sound frequencies of traffic lights, the audience will experience this ‘traffic symphony” via headphones to isolate the music within the hubbub of the park.

Red bleeds into green, colours no longer exclude one another, and the system that steers us every day loses its grip. What remains is a play of light, perception and disorientation. Intense reflections and afterimages conjure colours that exist beyond the three original signals. Control tips into freedom, direction into drifting.

Cabosanroque, known for Sous les violons, la plage at Noorderzon last year, make work at the intersection of sound, technology and visual art. Trànsit is an installation that immerses you in what happens when the rules blur.

About the artist

Catalan artist duo Cabosanroque, formed by Laia Torrents Carulla and Roger Aixut Sampietro, makes work centred on sound and its performative power. Their installations question both the exhibition space and the role of the audience, exploring the relationship between the artificial and the human. By combining disciplines such as music, technology, theatre and visual art, they create fields of tension and new spaces of experience. Last year they were also featured at Noorderzon with Sous les violons, la plage

Studio Animal, led by Javier Jiménez Iniesta, is a design studio from Madrid and Barcelona specialising in interior and temporary architecture. Their work connects contemporary ideas with the living environment and has been recognised with various international awards.
